One of friends sent me this story published at http://mba.learnhub.com/news/1190-IIM-A-students-now-to-don-film-directors’-hat, about IIM-A students in India donning roles of film directors, financiers, producers, marketers as part of an elective course titled ‘Contemporary Film Industry-A Business Perspective’. It made for a really interesting read and is reproduced below (Courtesy: Learnhub)Students of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad would play roles of film directors, financiers, producers, marketing gurus as a part of a reality show module to be included in ‘Contemporary Film Industry-A Business Perspective’, an elective course on film making being offered here.
The idea is to give students a real time feel of the reel industry and also familiarise them with each role that is played by various people in making a successful film.
Speaking to the media about this course module, course co-ordinator of Contemporary Film Industry(CFI) Kandaswamy Bharathan , said, “As part of a new conceptual learning methodology we are planning to introduce a module of reality show where the students of contemporary film industry will be divided in separate groups and asked to play roles as directors, producers, financiers, etc. We are planning to soon introduce a two module course-financial decision making and marketing-sometime in December this year.”
As per Bharathan a lot of effort and planning goes on to make a successful film. Marketing strategies are involved to ensure its success. According to him, a fusion of both art and commerce, like Three Idiots, makes a successful film.
Students pursuing this course have a huge potential as entertainment sector in India is growing at 14-15% annually, which is double the national GDP growth. The figures underline big roles for these management students to play in future in this fast growing sector.
IIM-A is the only management institute that offers an elective course on film making. As the course is gaining popularity the number of students applying for this course has gone up in the last two years.
Well, I must say that the it sure sounds as a really fun course especially if certain Bollywood Stars and producers could visit as Guest Lecturers and provide an insider perspective into the all the things that happen when a movie is made. Even the IVY League Business Schools in the US don't offer such courses and it's great to know that IIM-A is innovative with regards to its curriculum.
The movie Industry in India is certainly not as well organized as it should be and could probably use some MBA thinking and methodologies.
